Help with baby starting diet

My dd is 3yo. No dx other then unknown seizuredisorder, speech delay and ADHD, She has high receptive language skills and Icouldn’t get the drs to see past that and see past the seizures…and not blameit on “pre-existing” conditions. Seizures are under control at this time w/thisdiet :-) She started talking in June after being gfcf for 4 months. Things aregetting better…no ADD at all. We are waiting for a on dd.

Now my ds is 15mo. He is not talking…at all. We started fish oil and he isbabbling a bit more. He was dx with reflux at 6 weeks old and has been put onprevacid (ever since). As an infant he used to go in spurts of eating andstarvation. We tried every type of formula but he refused to eat. We eventried soy which he projectile vomited up. He would poop as many as 10 times aday. On one of our many trips to the hospital he was admitted and tested forallergies. RAST blood test of course was negative. But is IgG and IgA was allmessed up. It showed no antibodies or something like that…they explained ithas being zero (I will go back and check). They didn’t understand what it meantbut wanted to check again later for “metabolic” problems. We put him onneocate. He still did on and off feeds not as bad though. We retested and hetested a bit off but fine, we were happy because there weren’t any red flags. At this time we were stuggling w/our dd but didn’t know of the diet. Then weswitched him to whole milk because he loved yogurt and needed more food andwould drink milk best. Then started solids…he loved. Now he eats almostanything and lots of it, but he is staying at the same weight (23lbs). Now mydd used to poop green before the diet. Now my son poops green too has for quitesome time. We removed milk 3 days ago. He is now very whiney and screaming andcrying, but no green poop. He also got an double ear infection10 days ago. Hehas always been suseptable to colds (we blamed reflux but now not sure). Healso has always had exzema like bumps on his thighs and cheeks.

He is different then dd. He seems to like us LOL. He does some strange things. He is also very “content” to wander with toys. Sometimes he does hand flapping, not often. Sometimes when he bumps his head against the wall, he will do itover and over until I move him. He is happy to lay in his crib awake mosttimes. Sometimes I go to get him and he doesn’t even want out. Good eyecontact and happy…likes games.

He has had shots up to 6 mo. then we were researching about autism and gfcf anddecided not to do anymore. But I did have heavy antibiotics during my pregnancyw/him as well as during delivery and the rhogam shot too.

My question: am I nuts and paranoid or should I start some interventions now? If there is a problem I want to start early (my dd was almost 3). Feel free torespond to any of this. Where we live we have no hospitals. We have no roadswe fly everywhere.

A few things you mention jump out at me. One is the antibiotics.Have you addressed this issue with probiotics and maybe evenantifungal products? Antibiotic use is a very important issue inautism, and, as research is showing, a whole bunch of other medicaland social/cognitive problems.

Poop not being brown can mean a number of things. One of which isyour child may need taurine as a supplement to increase bileproduction. This is something you may want to check into.

Your son’s ear problems and eczema would seem to indicate foodissues, most probably dairy at a minimum.

I’m glad to hear you’re getting a hair test. Are you getting anelemental hair test from DDI so that you can interpret it with thecounting rules?

I would not hesitate to start interventions ASAP. All studies showthat the younger we start to help our children, the better off theywill be. ASD looks very different from child to child. Thestereotypes (unaffectionate being one) simply don’t apply to allkids. Your son is obviously struggling with medical issues that mayvery well stem from the same assaults on his system that my sonreceived–they just manifest in some different ways.

I too am treating my son in relative isolation (not what you’retalking about, that’s for sure, but very hard to to get what I needsometimes). If I can be of any help in regard to that challenge, I’dbe glad to try. Excellent news about your daughter and herwonderful response to your interventions.

My son is on probiotics. This is hisfirst bout with anitbiotics. He seems so much fussier lately. Anyconnection? Today he also was raising up on his toes for the firsttime (dd used to do it all the time…slowly getting better) and hisbalance seemed off. I hate to “jump the gun” if there isn’t anissue. But I guess I need others to let me know if I am crazy ornot.

Just for information. I have read a few moms’ posts on other groupsstating that their children regressed–that is became autistic–withthe use of antibiotics. Now, obviously, there were other thingsgoing on. But the main this is that their children seemed to becoping with these other things but the antibiotics (and theconsequences to the bacteria, immune system, etc) were what pushedthem over.
