8 yo asperger will gluten free diet help?
We are using GFCF with great success for the last two weeks to help myDS, who is 4, in his autistic symptoms (he doesn’t have a dx yet). Iam a big believer..he was self limiting to dairy and wheat and he haddark circles under his eyes, and skin issues. Poops were normal. Nowhe is doing much better behavior wise (still some issues but it isstill early yet).
My friend on the other hand has a son who is 8 and was diagnosed withmild aspergers and has none of the outward physical symptoms Imentioned for us, eats a varied diet, poops are normal. No skinissues. She is dubious and I am wondering…is there any evidence thatwould suggest she should try GFCF? Thoughts? She thinks he has alwaysbeen this way…can’t tell that there was a point where he shifted….

What are the behaviours/symptoms that resulted in the dx of aspergers? My sonwas (different) from birth and the gf/cf and partial feingold diets have changedhis life. Natalie

She told me his syumptoms were (I am taking them from some kind ofscreening test he took)…
1. Speaks like an adult or bookish manner and overly uses correctgrammar2. Talks excessively about topics that hold limited interest toothers3. uses words or phrases repetitively4. Interprets conversations literally5. Acts as though he understands more than he does6. Frequently asks inappropriate questions7. Difficulty beginning and ending conversation8. Eye contact issues9. Difficulty relating to others10. Few friends despite desire11. Limited interest in what other people find interesting12. Difficulty understanding feelings, social behavior rules, socialcues.13 immature14 temper tantrums15 Overwhelmed easily in crowds16 attempts to impose narrow instrests on others
Very smart but lacks organizational skills.Fine motor issues. His main problems are social and organizational.
Did line things up (tupperware, cars)Obsessive topics, they seemed more acute when he was inpre-school - like reading maps, thomas, etc. Now they are videogames andseem more normal- He needs to have books around. Also, he can bevery routinish (You have to come kiss me good night, why aren’t youtaking a shower?)
She needs some convincing to try it…husband and dr skeptical ofbiomedical interventions

Recommend to her to get Luke Jackson’s book ‘Freaks, Geeks and AspergersSyndrom” He mentions the changes since his mother put them on the gf/cf diet. I believe he has another one out now “Living on the GF CF Diet” not sure aboutthe title. He was 13 when he wrote the first one, I would recommend it toanyone who has an adolecent on the spectrum for both the parent and the child toread.
As far as the husband and doctor. The diet by itself has NO DANGERS, it can’thurt so why not try? If he responds as I think he will that will be proof initself!

I would not say “no dangers”, especially not in capital letters. There are some kids who had significant problems going gfcf. Nothingis “never a problem” for all kids. Most kids benefit from gfcf, somehave no benefit, some do worse, some have MAJOR [with capital letters]issues. It is definitely an intervention to consider tho, and usuallyit is one of the most benign and carries the least risk. But the riskis still there for certain kids.

What I was getting at is that most of the doctors Ihave spoken to are always saying (no way) to high dose vitamins, chelation, treating for yeast, etc……. they have also told me that the diet is a wasteof time but do not warn about harmful effects at least. If you are trying toconvince a doctor, it would be a good argument. Natalie
