Starting supplements - where to begin?
We have an appointment with a DAN! Doctor, but not until February 1st.Currently we are not using any specific supplements (well other thanGummi Vitamins) - should we wait until we see her to start anythingspecific?
Guidance from BTDT appreciated.
FYI: My daughter is 4.5 and has a language delay but I suspect mild PDDand my son will be 3 in 2 weeks and has been tentatively diagnosed ASD(will know more at a multidisciplinary eval in June (aack the waiting)if that helps.

Please be carful when you start any vitamins, We sarted a whole bunch last yearon the recomendation of a naturopath DAN and had a huge backslide. We had tostop everything! for a couple of weeks and start over one at a time. Go Slow.

We also just started a wholelot of supplements all at once and we’re now seeing some wierdbehaviours emerging. We’ll now stop, and then gradually reintroduceeach supplement, documenting carefully as we go. What I’ve learnedabout biomed intervention in relation to my daugther is we have togo slow to get there fast. The good news is we’re getting there!

For people just starting out I recommend the Pangborn and Baker bookavailable from the ARI website. Their section on supps is cautiousbut fairly complete and very helpful as a starting point. I would NOTstart throwing in supplements just because it worked for someoneelse’s kid. I have put together a supp file available at autism-mercury yahoo group that can introduce you to supplements as well. You can download it, but you can also access helpful websites throughit.
It is best if you understand what the supps do and why our kids mightneed them rather than allowing your doctor to make all the decisions.People who are boards like this read about the mistakes doctors makeall the time. We need to educate ourselves. Often supps should beintroduced in a certain order and failing to do so can result inproblems. Eg. Introducing fish oil without adding vitamin E might bea problem. Staring MB12 without folinic can cause problems.
