Question for everyone…
What exactly causes the stimming behaviors? Recently my two year sonwith ASP has been doing a lot of spinning, biting, and puttingeverything in his mouth. THis was a problem a few months back butwent away. WEll it is back again. Does anyone know why the behaviorswould return? His vocabulary and cognitive skills seem to beexpanding but the stimming returned. Doe sthe gfcf diet eventuallyhelp this? He has been gfcf free for a week now…

When we started the diet, we saw good results in the first two weeksbecause the fog from the morphin was lifting. Then I began to see somehyperactivity which in our case was caused by too much high phenolic foods. Dana would probably know more specifically by what you are discribing. http://www.danasview.net she has lots of info and links on her site.
My best practice to pass on is keep a daily diary for him. Here is my format.4 columns. 2 narrow and 2 wide. Titled: time, supplement,food/beverage/activity, behaviour/symptoms. Use one page per day. You willbegin to see trends as to what is causing the behaviours. Write downeverything, good or bad. Also, only change one thing at a time. Wait a weekbetween changes, this will make it easier to see what is causing a reaction. Hope this helps some.

We all stim. It is just more pronouned in people with ASD. Watchpeople in a classroom after a coke or few cups of coffee. Maybe theyare shaking their leg or flipping a pencil or clicking and unclickinga pen. This is the same thing. It is just much, much more extreme inpeople with ADHD or ASD.
Basically, the reason for stimming is a hyperactive nervous system. The body calms itself by doing repetitive action, which releases asubstance that relaxes the body.
Does going GFCF help this? In the long term, the answer is probablyyes in most people, especially those unable to properly digest milkand wheat.
What can make him stop? Typically what relaxes him will be whatrelaxes you: low stress, music, sometimes, heavy pressure. GettingBright lights, loud sounds, or being gently touched are a few thingsthat might induce the stimming.
This board is way ahead of mainstream medical thoughts on thesubjects. Doctors like myself first thoughts are of drugs to calm kidslike yours down. Everybody on the board is talking about magnesium andzinc, and wouldn’t you know it they work to stop the stimming withoutas many side effects.

About 85% of stims are for self-calming. The other 15% are forself-stimulation.
