Aba question

I am trying to learn to do ABA for Alyssa. I have NO help. NO consultant, helpers, anything. I can’t afford them. My question is how doyou get started?

Alyssa is very low functioning. She follows very little direction. Has A LOT ofstimming that I just can’t seem to get her to stop. Looking at ceiling, handflapping, crossing her eyes, major stuff with her hands. How do I get her tostop this, or redirect it so that I can get her to “Sit down, Hands down, Lookat Me, Do this…. ya know!

I have a fabulous book called “Teaching Language to Childrenwith Autism or Other Developmental Disorders” by Mark L. Sundberg,PHDand James W.Partington,PHD They run Behavior Analysts,Inc inCalifornia. I ordered it after watching a fascinating show onDateline about a little girl who’s mother learned this technique andthe girl “recovered.” I actually tracked down the mother and we spokeon the phone quite a bit-I found this book amazing and my daughterwas able to make HUGE strides before ever starting preschool orkindergarten. She does great now and I attribute it to a headstart athome.I also have a workbook from there that lets you evaluate yourchild over and over to find out specifically what s/he has learned. It was very helpful and encouraging to see improvement. The addressin the book is Behavior Analysts,Inc 3329 Vincent Road PleasantHill,CA 94523 Phone # (925)210-9374 They also have a website whichI haven’t checked out lately but it used to bewww.corteks.com/STARS

Can anyone give me any advice on what to do if I am looking to work with anABA consultant? I would rather if they could teach us the techniques but if it is necessary we can hire them to work with my son. Any suggestions would begreat. Not sure how to get started.

It really depends on where you live. I live in Utah. Ourconsultants name is Scott Pryor and his email address isscott@…. He trained us how to do the ABA at homeand consults us on a monthly basis to make sure everything isrunning smooth. I would email him and find out if he can help youout or if he can direct you to anyone else. He has been AWESOME towork with.
