Halloween help- candy ideas
My three year old son is beside himself with excitement over Halloween.Every single day he asks if today’s the day for trick or treating. He’stelling me that he’ll get candy and presents at trick or treating. That’s the problem I have no idea what kind of candy to get for him. (I was planning to go to out closest neighbors with ” his ” candy). Weare GF/CF/SF and just this past week we fiqured out that corn is also aproblem.

Halloween has got to be one of the hardest times for GFCF’ers. Thekid gets to go collect all this beautiful candy that he can’t eat.The rest of the world probably thinks we’re all crackpots. Nobodyunderstands. I wish I knew. Some are saying no sugar and no red dyetoo. What is left? Candy corns and skittles are GFCF but both havered dye and sugar.
Maybe we can just change the holiday all around. Make it like, uh,game day, or singing day?

My son Connor is 6 what we do is make up safe treat bags ahead of timeand I plant them at friends and some of the school faculty houses. Connor and Idrive around to these houses and he gets to do his trick or treating there. Mytwo older kids go to a friend’s house and trick or treat with her and I justpick them up after Connor and I are done.
Treats: small toys from the dollar store, halloween rings, rubber spiders/batsetc.., for candy I get gf/cf macaroons, all natural suckers, sesame snaps, tetrapks of juice or choc. soy milk, plain chips, tostitoes corn chips. I try toonly get one sweet thing in each bag and lots of novelty odds & ends.
Connor gets the biggest kick out of dressing up and visiting. The treats aresecondary. He’s Bob the Builder (Connor the Contractor!!) My husband is acarpenter so this is a really big deal for Connor. Hope these ideas help some.

You’d be surprised, lol. My mom used to be the one handing outraisins, toothsbrushes, homemade treats or little toys onHalloween - and I’m in my mid-thirties. ‘Course now the homemadething is out the window…
I hand out toys, too (Dollar Store, or Oriental Trading Goods),little bags of chips and pretzels (many grocery storeshave “Halloween-sized” snack packs of these). We’ve done this everyyear - even b/f GFCF…and actually, the kids like it! Littlevariety.

For some people, these additives can be nasty. I would not havethem (my son is SCD anyhow), but if you are very careful with yourchild’s diet any other time, perhaps you could allow a ‘legal’ butclearly ’spacial occasion’ slip? Problem with that is, its aslippery slope; can’t you just see the argument, “But daaaaad! I hada treat at Halloween, and now it’s (chose one) Billy’s birthdayparty/School holiday party/four in the afternoon on a rainy saturdayand I’m bored…etc etc.”.
People do that. It seems that there are a LOT more Halloweenparties going on…and less trick or treating. I think it startedwith the concern of kids getting tainted candy, but the upshot isthat there are some malls open for Halloween parties, sometimesschool or township-sponsered events…check out what the celiackids’ organizations activites are…since so many candies containwheat or starch, these kids can’t have a lot of commercial treatseither.
The NT family next door has a daughter w/ severe food allergies,so we are all getting together after trick-or treating for a littleparty afterwards, and the kids are trading in their treat bags for acool toy.
There is a dentist in our area that is accepting in kids’ treatbags for a raffle ticket for an IPOD - how cool is that?? And thecandy is going to the kids in Hurricane shelters who can’t trick ortreat this year.
Point is, there are a LOT of people out there who don’t “have” toavoid the candy aspect of Halloween, but do anyway…just a matterof finding something cool to do.

We’re GFCF and corn free too and I’ve been so wrapped up in our IEPthat I completely forgot to look into candy that he could eat inadvance. Anyway, I do have a stash of Tiger Pops (corn-freelollipops), kosher dark chocolate coins and some toys. We bought twoidentical trick or treat bags and are going to try to make a switcherowhen he’s done trick-or-treating. We’ll see how it goes.
