Question for mthfr moms

My husband and I are thinking of having another child and since we havehad two children with special needs (Down Syndrome, ASD)I would like tolower my homocysteine levels prior to conception. Jill James studysuggests taking daily 800 mcg folic acid, 500mg-1gram TMG, and 1 mg ofmethyl b-12. My question is that if I decide to do the methyl b-12 inthe form of a shot, how much should I take in ml? I really don’t wantto have to do more than one shot per week because I hate shots. Rightnow I am taking a lozenge of methyl-b12 but I question it’seffectiveness.

My son has the MTHFR gene mutations. He does VERY well with FolaPro(methyltetrahydrofolate)instead of folic or folinic acid. It is byMetagenics, I believe. I’ve heard B6 is helpful, too. Take the P-5-P form.

I never tested myself for mutations. I really should. I take asublingual mB12 myself these days.

Do you feel you have a heavy metal issue? Have you consideredchelating yourself for a year or two before conceiving? Do you havethe dental amalgams standing in the way?

I have only one filling in my entire mouth and I am quite sure it isan amalgam since I received it in the 80’s. Would one filling reallymake a difference? I was seeing a kinesiologist in Houston and hesaid that he felt “energy” from mercury coming from me. I am a bitskeptical when it comes to the “energy” stuff. Where in the heckwould I have picked up mercury? I keep trying to figure out if I am alittle bit ASD myself because I was kind of a different child but myhusband thinks not :-). I am sure we all wonder that.

If you ever consider chelation, you will have to get that fillingreplaced with a composite. One filling probably does not make adifference as far as passing on a mercury burden to a baby inutero. I had 10.

As far as mercury exposure, it is hanging in the air and depositedin our soil. Coal burning power plants blow horrendous levels in tothe air on a daily basis. Mercury is naturally present in ores andfuels… used in many areas of industry. You cannot escape exposureto mercury. If your body has trouble excreting heavy metals, youcan get in to trouble.

I don’t know anything about energy fields… the concrete thinker inme has a very hard time believing such claims.

Ah, I tell my husband I am an MMR away from Autism myself. I feelmy son has many of my traits taken to a negative extreme (socialanxiety, uncomfortable with eye contact, trouble concentrating andsitting still, etc). I blame vaccines on that one for him. Mybrother has horrendous mental health and social problems whichincapacitate him on a cycle that seems to run like clockwork. Mysister probably makes a good case for functional Aspergers (if thereis such a thing… she sure is eccentric), but don’t tell her that!

I wish you luck in your decision to have another child. I couldnever get my husband to try again. Lucky our ASD child is our thirdand not our first.

Have you asked any doctor about odds/chances/risks? I’d beinterested in hearing what the conventional wisdom is these days.
