Second child

My son is 5 years old and Moderate to Severely Austistic. We havebeen GFCF for 2 years and have seen an amazing difference. His fatherand I are considering having another chlid in the near future. Whatis your opinions of us starting our child GFCF from birth to hopefullyrid him/her of the possibility of having these food issues that my sonhas? My son has had a very rough life because of the autism, I don’twant to put another chlid through that if I can help it.

I had a baby last December and had to decide what to do about diet.Since I believe the need for the diet is because of metal poisoning,I felt it was not necessary to be on a restricted diet but focus myefforts on eliminating exposure. I decided to be watchful and go onit if I had any suspicions though. I ate a regular diet duringpregnancy and for the first 5 months. I then decided to do a 1 monthtrial GFCF since I was nursing just to see if I saw a change eitherway. To my surprise my son did not react like I expected. When Iwas eating anything, he was sleeping through the night. Once I wentGFCF, he began waking once or twice in the night, was cranky, criedalot and was very gassy. At the end of the month I went back to aregular diet and he was sleeping through the night again and barelyever cries. This baffled me until I started him on solid food. Igave him rice cereal and he was gassy and cranky again. I beganwatching his diet vs. his sleep habits and mood and discovered he isintolerant to rice. When I had gone GFCF, I replaced gluten withrice which is why he didn’t do well. I personally feel going GFCFwhile pregnancy is overkill since it is not the gluten and caseinthat cause the problem in the first place. It is kinda like puttingointment on the skin before you get a cut. This of course is mypersonal opinion and others may feel differently.

We are actually thinking about having another child too. Our son isthree and has been on the diet since March. I am actually seeing hisDAN doctor myself and had tests done to see my food allergies. I havestarted the diet (GFCF) and I have also eliminated all of my foodintolerances. I am also on a list of supplements now too. I haveread and heard from several sources that the diet is very importantduring pregnancy and nursing. Since we don’t have the answer for whatdefinitely triggers/causes autism, I think it is safest to go on thediet. It is also so much healthier anyways. It’s a big sacrifice, but I think it is worth it if it means having a typical child the nexttime around.
