Lactose intolerance, deficiency of the enzyme lactase

As a baby, James (100% Alaskan Native by the way) was on Soy-Formula cuz hecouldn’t handle milk-formula. He was a “projectile vomiter”. But he “outgrewit” and was “fine”. He doesn’t have any of the “normal symptoms” that thisarticle talks about. Butttt, I am now REALLY curious about the LactoseIntolerance.Does anyone have an Native children on here???Any that are lactose intolerant??Lactose Can Spoil the Joy of Dairy FoodsAs many as 75 percent of all American Indians and Alaskan Natives areaffected by lactose intolerance, according to the National Institute ofDiabetesand Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The condition is caused by a deficiency ofthe enzyme lactase, which breaks down milk sugar in the body, and is moreprevalent in racial and ethnic groups than among peoples of northern Europeandescent.Symptoms of the condition can include gas, bloating, nausea, cramps anddiarrhea, and can begin anywhere from a half hour to two hours after consumingfood that contains milk sugar, or lactose. But symptoms and their severity canvary between sufferers, and experts advise that you should find out whichfoods you can eat and which ones you should avoid. Commercially availabledietary supplements such as Dairy Ease and Lactaid, taken in advance of eatingproducts with dairy, can also ease or prevent the suffering.”While I don’t have any statistics about how many children are diagnosed, Ican tell you that it is estimated that 30 million to 50 million Americans arelactose intolerant,” says Laura Rodgers, pediatric dietitian at theUniversity Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. “And it is real prevalent ina lotof ethnic groups such as African Americans, American Indians, Asians,Hispanics and Jewish people.”++++++++++++++I bought Cutie non-dairy (like ice cream sandwiches)tonight. At first he said “mom, these are DIFFERENT, but then he said “hey, thesetaste like coffee, wow, I like these and they are sooo cute” (cuz they aresoo small and cute) I realize this food is NOT soy free or wheat free, butit’s a step in the right direction. And if James’ ONLY intolerance is dairy, then we have a winner with a fake Ice cream treat.
