Too much carrots
Has anyone had any problems with your child eating too many carrots ordrinking too much carrot juice? My son is getting a slight orange tinge to thebottoms of his feet and hands, I don’t know if it’s related or not. He drinks1-2bottles of carrot juice per day. He loves it and it’s helped his eye contacteven more.

My daughter has never been able to digest them. We noticed it when she wasan infant and she was getting them in the Gerber potted food, and then lateras a toddler. She’d poop them whole. (sorry!) More recently, when I tried abeta-caroteine supplement, she didn’t tolerate it either. One of the issueswas a change in skin color, with a more yellow-orange tinge.
She too will eat them very gladly… My experience is that when she wants alot of something, it means she shouldn’t really have it.

According to Rev. Malkmus of Hallelujah Acres (a Christian raw vegansite that is EXCELLENT), this can happen when consuming a lot of carrots (theyare big on carrot juice at HA), and it is harmless. I can’t remember thedetails, but I wouldn’t worry after reading that. Maybe the info is on that siteforyou to read about. Not sure.

how old is your son?
Both my kids were “jaundice” when they were born, but “grew out of it”.BUTT, I babysat a toddler who would get an ORANGE NOSE when she would eat toomany carrots.
I assumed this was because her body couldn’t process the carrots, just likewith jaundice.
This is just a guess.
If you reduce the amount of carrot juice, does it go away?If you eliminate the carrot juice, does it go away?
When you say 1-2 BOTTLES of carrot juice, how many OUNCES are you talking?

Michael is almost 9. He has never had this before. But is just in the lastmonth been drinking so much carrot juice. they are the Naked Juice orOdowalla individual bottles, I think about 16 oz. each.
We’ve cut back on it in the last week and he’s still a little bit orange. It’s not very noticeable, but I notice it.

ASD kids often can have problems converting beta carotene to vitaminA. I’ve heard of kids becoming orange as a result. This isn’tconsidered harmful in the general population and the only harm I’veheard of in the ASD population is if parents are relying on betacarotene for the vitamin A. If you think that your son’s eyecontact has improved as a result of the carrot juice that would seemto indicate he is making the conversion successfully. That would begood news! I would think then that the orange hands and feet arethe excess beta carotene.

The palms and soles of the feet are the common areas to turn yellowor orange if you eat tons of beta-carotene rich foods. It is deemedharmless, but I question if we stress the liver with mega-dosing ofbeta-carotene. If beta-carotene is converted to vitamin A in theliver, are you perhaps giving the liver too much work? It is unableto process all of this beta-carotene so it gets dumped in to cells?
Believe me, I am no scientist.
My ASD son drank Odwalla carrot juice when he was about 2. I usedit for mixing supplements and just thought it would be a goodthing. His diarrhea was greatly aggravated by this juice. Do yousee any gut problems? How about any itching (on body)? I hearditching could be a sign of allergy or intolerance.
