Favorite meal items

OK. So, my 7 YOA ASD, ADHD…..has been GFCF for a couple of months now (CF for6 months). He will not eat ANYTHING that is mixed with anything else. Forexample he eats tacos (only meat in the shell) by taking the meat out, eating itall first then the shell. He has to eat every “group” of food alone, one afterthe other. He is doing well, but his diet consists of bacon, bologna, hot dogs,cereal, waffles and so called tacos. He also loves fresh fruit, but wont toucha veggie.Do you all find yourselves feeding your kids the same meal over and over? Hewont eat the fish sticks or chicken because it has breading, but doesnt like itwithout it. He is not complaining about the same old foods, but I dont want toget him burned out and then rebel!!Any suggestions?

    Well… I understand your frustration. My son eats simple foods too.I do not think he will ever food combine beyond carrots and peas!

    If simple is what he eats, then simple is really your best answer.Does he have an aversion to raw or cooked or both? My son eats 1 1/2raw veggies, cucumber and maybe a carrot. He will eat a lot moresteamed veggies.

    Your son’s diet consists of what you give him and he isn’t going togive you suggestions, so just keep trying to introduce things, don’tgive up. Try eliminating a food and introducing a new one in smallbite size portions and ask him to “try one bite” and just leave himalone. Don’teven WATCH him do it. The less commentary and the lessvested interest you have in it, the more likely he will be to try it.

    Another thing I do is give the food fun names. Broccoli = dinosaurtrees; cauliflower = alien heads; asparagus = magic wands, macadamianuts = Scooby snacks; fish = basilosaurus. You get the idea. Coursepick things that your son will identify with.

    He seems to be comsuming a lot of salt and refined carbohydrates inthe form or sugars and fructose. Too much of either of these dullsthe palate, giving a vegetable no chance of even registering on hisradar. The less sugar and fructose he has in his diet, the easier itwill be to get veggies into him.

    Check out some books from the library on vegetarian cooking and seeif you can incorporate veggies through rice, quinoa or lentils.

    Will he eat soups? Simple squash, pea, carrot and broccoli soups arepossible.

    Turnips, carrots, parsnips, rutabega and beets can all stand aloneroasted, pureed or mashed with olive oil. They are “sweet” and wortha try.

    Make “mock mashed potatoes”. Steam cauliflower, puree it, add oliveoil (or GFCF ghee), and season with S&P to mimic mashed potatoes. Ilearned this trick when I did Atkins many moons ago : )

    Have you ever tried giving him avocado?

    I do meal planning over a two week period to avoid sameness. We allneed a variety to get a balance of minerals and vitamins.

    Hi, have you tried making smoothies? My kids love them and they are great forhiding things in. You would be suprised how many veggies will buzz up withouttaste but try the fruit only at first to convince him they are OK. Take somefrozen fruit buzz like crazy in a food processor, add some milk substitute justenough to make it smooth. It’s like sherbet, serve like dessert. Hope thishelps.
