Really, really new & in need of input

A little background, my 3.5 yr old has a pretty significant speechdelay and is in early childhood special ed. as a result. There hasbeen some discussion about autism and while I have resisted havinghim tested must acknowledge that he shares many of the traits.

I’ve been doing some research regarding treatment options and readabout a GFCF diet. I must admit, I was skeptical. To me it seemedrather extreme. But today at lunch I notice Jimmy drank way moremilk than usual. I couldn’t believe his reaction. It was almostexactly like the response you’d see in someone high on pot, uncontrollable giggling, glassy eyes, frenzied an bizare behaviorincluding alot of spiting (which come to think of it I’ve only seenwhen he drinks milk) He wanted me to hold him and I held him quitetightly, he seemed to want that and it calmed him down, a littleunusal as well since he usually doesn’t like to be held that way. Hegot upset when I tried to put him down. Not long after thisincident, which thankfully didn’t last too long her crashed and fellasleep

This reaction occured almost immediately after drinking the milkwhich seems a little fast to me. He also ate alot of raisensearlier in the day.

Has anybody else seen this type of reaction?

Another question, is it possible he could react badly to dairy butnot gluten?

I’m copying and pasting this from another post I replied to onanother board (the book would totally answer your question about themilk - and no, “instantly” is not too soon for a milk reaction):

I just finished reading Karyn Seroussi’s “Unravelling The Mysteriesof Autism”

It was a really easy read and explained exactly why the diet worksand what it does. She’s also the parent of a little boy who was dxwith autism, and has made a great recovery. Now, my son did not have the classic regressive autism. He never hadear infections nor showed any indication of food or gut issues. Butwe’ve seen tremendous progress (from day 1!) and plan to keep him onit far a long time. When we started, we committed 6 months to it - then we’d re-visit itand take him off of he didn’t show progress. He’s not coming off.I’d say the first 2 months were the most difficult and frustrating.

And he doesn’t eat that differently from everyone else. That was aconcern of mine. But he has sandwiches with homemade gfcf bread. Hehas homemade chicken nuggets with gfcf breading, he has pasta, hehas waffles, french fries, toast, french toast, applesauce, meatballs, chili, nachos and salsa, turkey bacon, scrambled egss, sausages, ice cream (So Good Butterscotch swirl - better thanregualr uce cream!!!) cones (gfcf cones), alot of rice dishes,mashed/baked potatoes…I made a gfcf cake for dh’s birthday -nobody knew!! (just to let you see that this diet is as varied as aregualr diet).

But now we really have no issues. He eats a wide variety of foods, gets all of his supplements (that was frustrating - figuring outsupps and which ones he needed and which he would take). And I justplan ahead and bring his foods with us and provide all his food forschool. We’ve been lucky that our entire family has been supportive and theyall have gfcf foods at their houses for when we go over.

Just wanted to tell you that I’m fairly new to the whole diet thingbut I just dove in head first. At first it seems very overwhelming, but it gets easier. I eliminated the casein first, as most peopledo, and that was pretty easy for the whole family. I noticed thatmy kids drank way too much milk. Between the two of them, theywould drink a gallon of milk if I would’ve let them. Now I havethem both on original almond milk and they love it.

When I started the gluten part, I cleaned out my pantry and fridge.I only put the foods that they are allowed to have on the shelvesthey could reach. That way I didn’t have to lock my cabinets. I hidthe stuff that they really liked that they can’t have anymore, likepoptarts, yogurt and nutrigrain bars. It is very overwhelming atfirst but it gets easier. My kids have been totally GFCF for 3weeks now and when I went to pick Braden up from school Friday theytold me that he had his best week in 2 months! That was enough forme to want to continue the diet. It also really helps with their GIproblems.

If you have any ?’s that you think I can help you with, feel free toask. I love to help people out with the diet.
