School snacks, yeast questions, and b-hci

We’ve been doing the GF/CF diet in some form for close to a yearnow. Went CF initially (pre-diagnosis) and in May attempted morewholeheartedly at doing GF. My son (4yo) does have a fairly limiteddiet in that he refuses to eat any vegetables though we provide themconstantly. Instead, he will eat fruit. With meat he does just fine.He drinks quite a bit of pear juice, some rice milk, and onlyrecently added water in (I think the supplementation is helping himincrease variety right now, which is awesome! Now if we can getthose veggies going. ;) ). He attends an early intervention pre-school and I provide all his snacks. I did a class observation onhim last week and noticed that after eating his snack, some juiceand a banana, that he got pretty hyper. I’m realizing it may be thebanana doing it to him because I tested it out a few days later andthe same thing happened. So I’ve taken bananas away for now. We justhad his OAT and Comprehensive Stool tests read, and even thoughyeast was low and good flora was doing pretty good, his DAN! doctorwants to increase his probiotic from 1.5 billion to at least 25billion. Since the appointment on Friday, I’ve increased hisprobiotic to 3/4.5 billion and he’s had very diarrhea-ish poos forthe last 2 days. Is this die-off? He’s been very gassy too, thoughnot having incontinence issues each time. Usually it’s only duringhis normal time of having a bm. But they are really bad. Btw, wealso added in L-Lysine at the same time, 500mg.

Along with the increase on the probiotics, I’m limiting his sugarand fruit intake. This puts me in a bind. What can I give him? Ifbananas are bad, then grapes are worse. He won’t eat strawberries. He will eat mandarin oranges, but I’m trying to limit the sugar andthat cuts them out. I would love to have some suggestions on what topack for his school snacks. He occassionally takes Wylde pretzels,Ener-G Cinnamon Crackers (those are out now due to sugar), soyyogurt, muffins (limited) and such. But it all seems to carb &starchy to me.

Okay. Last question :) One item the DAN! doctor wanted to add in wasBetaine-Hydrochloric Acid. Anyone have experience with this? Thebottle I saw said DO NOT CHEW. Well, my son can’t/won’t swallowpills whole so I don’t feel like I can do this. Due to my sonsmalabsorption/maldigestion issues, the doctor feels this is good tocompliment the he’s currently taking: Zyme Primeand AFP Chewables. I would love to hear any comments on this.

I have a couple of questions for you. If yeast shows low and goodflora level are good. Why increase the probiotics? and why using the yeastprotocol? This doesn’t make sense to me.

The problem with bananas is (hi amines) they are not on the high phenol listor the salisylate (spl?) list for Feingold. Now a lot of kids who react to themalso have a problem with phenols BUT they are not on those lists.

Is it a hyperactivity problem? Is that why this protocol? I have never heardof the other med. you mentioned, so I can’t comment on it. Watch for an answerfrom Dana, she is by far the most experienced parent on this forum (in myopinion anyway). Good Luck.

I’m no help in interpreting the test results but I can tell you thatbecause he is going through a transition with medications and physical reactionsto those, you can count on the behavioural reactions too. Hang in there, oncehe gets stable the rest should fall into place.

Bananas are high amine, which for some kids acts like phenol

    Bananas also feed yeast

Grapes and strawberries are high salicylate/phenol, but not amine. They might work for your child, especially if given with No-Fenol enzyme

My son tolerated bananas with No-Fenol also, but some kids don’t.

    Ideas here
