2 weeks into diet
OK wonderful people, we are making our first real and true attempt atthis diet. We never thought we had to do the GFCF diet. We ran thepeptide test from great plains, and it said that we didnt need thediet, however, we could try it. That was all my husband needed to say,Heck no!
But, we continued to Not progress with all of the biomed stuff we weredoing, and again, I considered the GFCF diet. We ran an IgG test inAugust of this year and the ONLY thing that he seemed to have an issuewith was casein. He scored off the page with casein and oysters (like Iwould ever give our son oysters?) I could have SWORN that he wouldhave scored high on gluten, because he craves gluten!!! So, weeliminated casein in August and as of this date, no real improvements.
Then, I read another mom’s story whose son recovered 100%. This momsaid that she didnt think her son needed the GFCF diet, but she triedit and it was one of the best things she could have done…her sonremarkably calmed down and was able to sit and concentrate on his ABAtherapy.
Knowing that other than the extremely restrictive diet and autismdiagnosis, I didnt think our son needed the diet either, but he isEXTREMELY HYPER and I thought, hey…maybe the GFCF would help with hishyperactivity?
So, we have now been gluten free for the past 2-3 weeks. It hasnt beenperfect but I am determined to make it perfect. He still haveinfractions, however, we shoot enzyems into him upon every infraction, which is getting less and less.
Now for the problem (if you made it this far)….he is NOT becommingmor calm and compliant and wonderful with this diet…he is worse thanever. The notes home from school say that he is worse than his worstday last year. He is climbing everything, hitting, screaming and thestimming is at an alltime high…and I mean constant stimming. Ithought things would get better, he would be able to be calm, sitstill, concentrate, attend to school better, but what is going on?
All I can think of is 2 things. The first is…could this bewithdrawl? I thought withdrawl would make him lethargic? Andfinally, whenever I was stumped for a GFCF thing to send to school…Isent in bananas and apples cut up. Someone from the CK2 list told methat apples/bananas made their kids crazy…and really raised yeast.
Any thought here? Is this withdrawl? Our OAT test is being mailed tous as we speak…but I am really a wreck. I told my other yahoo grouphow discouraged I was about all of his regression and I could reallyuse some guidance.

If he is digressing you are going too fast and yes he’s withdraling.Go slower. Remove casien the first week entirely, then on week two, remove gluten from dinner, the next week, from lunch, the last frombreakfast. Go slower. He should not be getting worse. It isn’t aslikely if you pull the foods out slower.

I didn’t have the benefit of this wonderful group when we went GFCF and wewent cold turkey. Day 3 goes down as one of the worst days of my life. Iactually called my daughter’s DAN dr, crying. It was a rocky week, butwhen she came out of it there was much improvement. This is the singlebest thing we have done for her and, although cold turkey was miserable forboth of us, we did get it over with quicker! Since you’ve already made theswitch, I wouldn’t change anything yet. You can keep a food diary to seeif his worst days can be correlated to something he’s eating. I know it’shard now, but give it some more time for the junk to get out of hisbody. As I was sobbing on the phone, our DAN dr. was cheering! I wasready to kill her but she turned out to be right, withdrawal is tough but agood sign that you are on the right track.

I would definitly try cutting out the fruit. Not all but try the bananasfirst and cut back on the apples. These are two things that bother my son. Bananas are high amines and cause problems with a lot of ASD kids. To muchapples have the same effect on my son, red grapes, food dyes, msg and artificialflavours or sweeteners. Have a try at these. Keep a daily diary for him to seewhat he is reacting to. With the above mentioned items my son would begin toshow a reaction (hyper and sometimes aggressive) with about 1/2 to 1 hr. We hadthe same problem about 2 weeks into the diet. Good Luck.
