Gfcf vs adhd diet
Hi there. I have a question for you out there who have kids with Autism as wellas ADHD (maybe that is everyone, not sure). My 7 year old son, who was put onthe GFCF diet about 6 months ago for his Aspergers, also has ADHD. While on theGFCF diet his skin has become the right color, hie circle under his eyes havegone away and he has become a bit less “foggy”. However, his ADHD issues, whichreally interfere with school and focus have become worse. Much worse, so muchthat the doctors want to increase his meds, which I am trying to get him off of.
I know this diet is awesome. It has done so much for so many deservingfamilies who have been able to get some parts of their kids back! But I amwondering if I am going about it wrong. A nutritionis we just saw told me thatkids with ADHD need whole grains, no sugar, no additives……and so on. My sondoes not eat additives, sugar (well as little as possible), preservatives, nocaesin, but obviously with the GF diet there are no whole grains. I am veryconfused as to what “part” of my son’s disorder I should be treating. I cant doboth, and I dont want to put him in a coma on pharm meds.
Has anyone out there run into the same problem? I will never re-introduce theCF portion to him, but I am worried that I might really screw up his system if Igo GF, but this doesnt seem to be working right for him. He uses BrainchildNutritional vitamins and minerals which I will never stop because they were aGodsend. Also enzymes and probiotics, cal/mag, etc.
Any suggestions??? Im I missing something that is staring me in the face thatI am not thinking of??
Thanks so much - Susan

Well I am no dr but I would say that the GF is more important than grains, alotoe people are allergic to them and still are fine without them, I have alsoread that GFCF is good for ADHD. Have you tried sensory integration or Samonastherapy? I think there are more alternatives out there for ADHD than forAutism. I would do a search on the net and see what you get about it beforegive your Autistic child GLUTEN it is the most evil for them. Is he getting enough sleep and protein? this is my problem since my 4 yr out goes to publicschool and soemtimes likes to stay up in his room and party and sometimesdoesnt eat dinner and the pnly real protein he gets is Peanut Butter.

Look into the Feingold diet. I do not have any personal experiencewith it, and you would probably want to do it on top of the GF/CFdiet.

Once the child is GFCF, I think lots of other issues tend to come tothe surface. We do Feingold on top of GFCF, and it works WONDERS forus! HIGHLY recommended (and not terribly difficult to do, either).Lots of moms who write in to the wonderful, active discussion andrecipe boards at the Feingold website are doing GFCF/FG, and can be oftremendoius help with starting the diet.

I noticed that many parents reported that their kids became morehyperactive 3-6 wks after the diet, including mine. I hope thefollowing information is helpful, as turkey is obviously acceptablefor the diet.

Someone else has already recommended you look at Feingold. Besides the”artificials” (color, flavor, and preservatives), the diet at first alsoeliminates foods with high natural salicylates, including many fruits. I amwondering if this might be part of your son’s issues: phenol intolerance.Eliminating the foods or adding a phenol-oriented enzyme http://int.a1nutritionproducts.com/sf/images/status_8.gifHide commentare both options hereif this is the case.
