Withdrawal??

Yes this is yet another clearly annoying question from a newbie. Sorry:( I’ve come so to depend on this list and feel as though I often ask toomuch. I’m so new at this and just so afraid of not doing it correctly asI’m feeling this may be the ONE thing I may actually have some control overto help the person I love most in the world. Today was pretty much day #2of Gf/Cf diet. I am not exactly sure how “clean” we are at this point as itis still pretty much trial and error for us as we learn .. and he is reallyrefusing just about EVERYTHING we’re presenting to him. Anyway, yesterdaywe noticed it a bit and much more so today … he got kind of spacey towardsthe end of the day. Almost giggly. This came after a lot of running andbouncing and tearing up my house (which is pretty much the usual around hereas he’s fairly hyper). He has been kind of sing songy (he’s non-verbal) …almost like a high whiny sing songy sound for the past 2 days .. and somestrange mumbled stuff under his breath that we can’t make out. Is thisnormal? Could it be withdrawal? Is there even such a thing? Sorry toramble. Any guidance greatly appreciated. You are all earning your wingshere on earth I might add and would certainly be feeling alot more lost thanI usually do in my fight against this horrid disorder if I didn’t have thislist to turn to. Thanks again in advance for any insight for you wise folkswho lead the way for the rest of the flock :)

Man, I had this really great post, too! :P
Don’t stress about asking lots of questions…I’m a newbie at thistoo and have a ton of them..I just haven’t sat down and asked themall!! :)
My questions involve mostly how strict a label reader you have tobe…I’m trying to avoid casien (the first thing we’ve taken out, doing wheat gradually), but it seems like EVERYTHING has it in it!!That 7 pg list off http://www.gfcfdiet.com is wonderful, but it’s alsostressing me out!!

DJ’s never really had terrible gastric troubles…just really softstools, not diarrhea..although he has had really sensitiveskin/eczema since he was a baby (he’s 8). (BTW, he’s Asperger’s/HFA)

Hang in there…we’re all in this together!!

BTW, is anyone on this group in Arizona? I’m having a terrible timefinding good stores that sell GFCF stuff (Phoenix area)

    OK, will try this again!

There is definitely such a thing as withdrawal. After all, these areopioid peptides we’re talking about! My son went through a spacey, giggly withdrawal too. It can be considered a good sign that yourson may really need this diet.

Some people try to first eliminate casein and then later on gluten tominimize withdrawal. We went cold turkey, and the withdrawal andfood refusal only lasted about two weeks. I’m a firm believer in theNike motto “Just do it!”.

Congratulations on Day #2! Your son will not refuse food forever.Mine eats better now than ever. It will take some time to identifyeverything taboo. Just last week I decided I had to remove gatoradebecause it seemed to be causing loose stools. Now he has had solidstools all week. Keep it up and go easy on yourself. You don’t haveto learn it all in a day.

P.S. I just received Lisa Lewis’ book “Special Diets for SpecialKids” in the mail today. I really recommend it and wished I had itfrom day one.

I’m sure this has been discussed before but I can’t find it so pleasebear with me. We just started the diet…today is day 5. My son hasbeen extremely grumpy all day. Just constantly fussing and crying. It seems like he doesn’t feel good and everything is bothering him.Even his therapist commented that he isn’t himself today. I actuallyfeel so bad for him. And also, he pooped 3 times today (usually onlygoes once) and it was borderline diarrhea. Are these withdrawalsymptoms? I’m not sure if it’s that or if he’s getting sick. He doeshave a rash that appeared 2 days ago. Hmm…I gave him an epsom saltbath tonight so hopefully that will help a bit. Anyway, can you tellme what withdrawal looks like? Also, is this about the time that itwould start (5 days in)? Thanks so much for your help!

For my son, withdrawal hit after he had been GF for one week. We had threedays of withdrawals. His withdrawal was extreme hyperactivity. He wasliterally climbing the walls. After those three days, he was a differentkid.

My son began withdrawing a week after starting the GF diet. He had had atendency to have violent temper tantrums prior to the diet. The withdrawalwas the worst yet, with broken vases and glasses, and head banging. Fivedays later, when the poop started coming two to three times a day, theviolence subsided. We have not seen that side of him since. (Nor has hispreschool which had called a behavioral expert who rarely sees 4 year olds!)

Hang in there. It’s worth it.

You need to start slower. Start with breakfast for about a week, then addlunch and so on. This is what I read about starting the diet. Regular foodis like an opiate for kids and they do go through withdrawal if you go toofast.
