What are “natural flavors”?
My son has tested IgG positive for dairy, wheat, soy, citrus & eggs. Our DAN! dr also told us to avoid MSG and all of its relatives.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what those mysterious “natural flavors”on the ingredients lists of so many foods can encompass? (I know itis not ideal, but I am 6 mos pregnant and already having troublekeeping up with stuff - the more convenience foods I can use the morelikely we will survive this!)

the listing of ‘Natural Flavour’ is pretty vague (spl?). If you areunsure about anything then it is better to phone the manufacturer or post theproduct or ingredients list here. Someone will either know the product or caninterperate the list for you.
Here are a few of the brands I use: Glutino brand rice fiber bread, Tinkyadaor Rizopia rice pasta, EL PETO soup bases (I use the veg or the chicken),Tostitoes corn chips, Old Elpasso hard taco shells, Natures Path Corn Flakes,Enviro Kids cereals (be careful, not all are gf), Hot Kids rice crackers (plain, salted or sesame only) and the Hot Kids Sno crisps (sweet original), Plainchips, Laze Stacks, Flieshman’s Lactose free margerine (this has artificials butis gf and cf). You will have to check for soy because my son doesn’t have aproblem with it and some of these things may have soy.
For my son’s lunches at school, I make large batches of the meals he likes andthen put up individual size servings in the freezer to send in his lunch. Ialso make big batches of muffins and freeze them individually in baggies for thesame thing. I buy family size bags of corn chips and chips and divide them inziploc bags for lunches too. I was using five alive juice boxes but I only sendwater to school now because I give him ‘No Fenol’ with any juice now. For myson bananas, red grapes, concentrated apple (sauce or juice), msg, food coloringand artificial sweeteners are the worst.
I try to avoid preservatives too but I do make some exceptions (but limit theamounts). Top dogs (original), Toupie ham (always check to make sure it is msgfree), Bacon (same thing witht he msg).
My best practice to pass on is keeping a daily diary of times, intakes andbehaviours. Every child reacts to different things and has different reactions, the best way to figure out what works for your child is observation. Whenadding new items, only add one thing at a time (including supplements), wait atleast one week to make sure there is no reaction before changing something else.My format is: 4 columns. 2 narrow and 2 wide. Titled: time, supplement,food/beverage/activity, behaviour/symptoms. Use one page per day, this makes iteasy to go back through and see trends. After getting a couple of weeks downyou will start to see trends and be able to figure out whats going on.
