Constipation issues
Hi,My daughter is currently taking the following supplements (along withall the others!) to help with her constipation but nothing seems towork very well.
400mg magnesium1500mg vitamin CBenefiber
seems like she’ll do well for several days in a row then go back toold habits and skip several days. I can’t keep her consistently goingand it’s holding us back from chelating. Any suggestions?

Does she have yeast issues? Constipation is a big yeast symptom. Also Benefiber constipated my son. Although it helps some people goto the bathroom it also constipates some. I would start treating herfor yeast. Have you talked to her doctor about it?

The problem with Benefibre is the fact that it is 100% solublefibre. If you give Benefibre without an absolute ton of water, thesoluble fibre absorbs what water there is which dries out thecolon. Then the movement of the colon is severely diminished(there’s a fancy word for that movement that I can’t remember–it’sthe movement that squishes the poop down and out) and you are thenin bad shape.
I’ve read that what you need to offer is about a 50/50 ratio ofsoluble to unsoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre is stuff like bran, nuts, fruit skins, etc. I’ve also read that ground flax has that50/50 ratio already. I grind up a lot of flax seed to bake with forthat reason although I don’t give it straight because there is anupper limit for how much kids should have.
Although yeast is very likely the main issue here, many kids becomeconstipated from a lack of water and exercise. See if you canincrease those as well as tackling the yeast. Parasites can alsocause constipation and it might be a good idea to be tested forthose just to eliminate the possibility.

We’ve only been on the diet 2 weeks (with my 12yosHAPPY for the first time since July!!!!), so I don’tknow whether psyllium would be a conflict, but Iassume it wouldn’t.
My son occsionally gets mild constipation & one or twoservings of psyllium always has “cured” him. I buypsyllium at a food co-op and mix about a tbsp with aglass of water. It’s natural, easy on the system, andhelps usually within 12 hours. It’s not like alaxative, so don’t expect anything dramatic. If Iremember correctly, it’s the main ingredient inover-the-counter products like Metamusel (I could bewrong, though, since it’s been years since Iresearched it), but if you buy it plain you don’t havethe other junk and it’s much less expensive.

What type of magnesium are you using? I read on the Kirkman’s sitethat there are several types and one (I believe it is magnesiumoxide) can be constipating. Of course I didn’t know that at firstand was giving my daughter extra when she was constipated increasingthe problem-oops! This is a learning process for me.
