Silicone pacifiers

Hello all, I am a new member with a beautiful, bright 3 year olddaughter new to the CF diet. She is progressing well in the pastmonth with increased eye contact, more socialization, more novelsentences, increased amounts and varieties of foods, fewer tantrums, and increased tolerance of her 19 month old brother who adores her,but shadows her every move. She recovers easier from her sensoryissue based “melt-downs” but still relies heavily on her pacifier toself-calm. She has had several accidental exposures to withlittle incident or regression. Three days ago, I gave her a siliconepacifier for the first time instead of a latex based one (due toavailability). Within hours, she regressed to screeching speech, constant eye-crossing, and frequent melt downs with crying tantrums. All have increased over this time period. She has eaten very poorlyin the past 48 hours and has had no known milk products.

Has anyone had a similar experience? I do not know what thedifference or similarity is of latex and silicone. Is anything knownabout a possible silicone link with autism? In a brief web search Ifound that silicone products were introduced sometime in the 1940’s,and I realize that there is a large controversy with siliconeimplants effecting the health of many women who have them.

Besides the issue of silicone vs. latex, you might contact the manufacturer ofthe new pacifier and make sure there isn’t gluten, casein, or anything similar(soy?) in the packaging or coated on the pacifier when it’s new. You might wantto ask what IS there, besides the obvious ones, to see if there is somethingelse your child is sensitive to that she hasn’t been exposed to elsewhere. WhenI saw your post I recalled that we had used silicone bottle nipples for ourdaughter, thinking they were better than latex. I’ll have to ask the doctorwho’s helping us with diet and related issues what she knows about silicone inthat setting. It also makes me all the more sure that I don’t want any in hersystem, be it on parchment paper, baking sheets, or anywhere else, in case itdid play a part in her current difficulties.

My dd is 3.5 and also still has her pacifiers. She uses the latexone. She will use the other but it does not get her the “fix”or “craving” like she needs. She has to have the soft latex or noone will rest comfortably until she does. Maybe it is not aquestion of an infraction but a question of “self-stimming” activityas it is with my dd. Just a thought.
