Focusing on other

My 9 year old adopted son’s main prob is FASD, but he has alot of others aswell. He doesn’t have all the criteria for Asperger’s Spectrum because he isnot anti-social. Butttt, I say he has LOTS of “AS Tendancies”.

One thing he is doing right now that drives me crazy is…

Focusing on other’s bad language. As a family we don’t like bad language, but it’s all around us. He ALWAYStells me when he hears it and WHERE he hears it and WHO says it.

HOW CAN I GET HIM TO STOP FOCUSING ON IT?

It’s a high functioning Autism thing, and I include PDD, Asperger’s and HFAin that description. My daughter is HFA and she’s exactly like that. Whenshe hears adult strangers say bad words, she will tell them what she thinksof their usage of language. It used to be that she would do it with reallymild expletives, but with social stories and social skills work, she’sgotten better at being tolerant - even when she is right and the personshould not have said a bad word. She still tells kids, no matter how mildthe language.

It’s getting them away from the black and white of good vs. bad, right vs.wrong, OK vs. inappropriate and getting them to accept that you cannotcontrol others in social situations and that even if they are wrong, itisn’t your place to put it right. It’s really hard for someone who naturallyonly sees black and white to accept that.

    I hope this helps.
